Junior Sailing

Since 1990 a training programme has been in place to look
after Junior Sailing.

Graduating to a keeler!
Rigging up Ready to launch We're on our way to race!

The first regatta of Dabchicks and Optimists had only
twelve participants.

Now. that was a race!

The 1994 regatta for Dabchicks, Optimists and Lasers
drew 126 boats to the water.

In 1995 Bernard Funke fired the imagination of the sailing
fraternity by creating the J22 Junior Regatta. He cajoled,
begged and threatened the J22 owners to provide their
boats for a weekend. This event has now become a fixture
on the National calendar attracting Clubs from all over the
country, even as far afield as Zimbabwe. The 2003 regatta
had 17 entries. The TYC team won five of the nine events.

Outreach Programme

The Outreach Programme is broad-based targeting
youngsters of 12 to 16 years who have had no previous
sailing experience.

Training on a regular once-a-month basis children are
taught how to swim. Sailing instruction is held on Club
Optimists and the children can graduate to a Hunter
keelboat. Some of the older children can eventually crew
on the International Class - J22's.

The training scheme is also open to parents and children
with no previous sailing experience, who after a basic
grounding, would like to join the Club.
