Sailing

"Boats are better for building competence and mental
health than any other toy - skis, airplanes, performance
cars or interactive graphic computers. It has something
to do with operating on the wildly various interface
between the two fluids, water and air, It takes balance
- whether you're in a dinghy or a 75 foot yacht - and
real or threatened capsizes drive the lessons
of balance into your fibre.

And beyond that, if they're lived with, boats teach
aesthetics. They can't help it!"

Stewart Brand - The Whole Earth Catalogue.

Sailing brings the whole family together!

Is sailing for you?

You can learn the fundamentals of sailing in one long day
or a weekend. After that, you can spend the rest of your
life learning to sail well.

As a pastime, sailing will consistently challenge you
like no other. Inland sailing is as exciting as sailing
on the sea - water and weather conditions change
constantly adding an element of adventure to every
experience. Remember, a small river leads to a dam.
The skills learned on the dam - from the basics of
tying knots, basic pilotage and boatmanship - could
lead to mastering the art of navigation and then to the sea.

At TYC our new members also have the advantage
of attending courses on training yachts where experts
help develop and hone sailing skills. Training courses
are valuable to those starting out and Juniors -
the future blue-water sailors of South Africa.

New sailors have the choice of crewing with experienced
sailors or inviting experienced sailors to "show them the
ropes" on their own yachts.

The TYC offers opportunities for those just starting out,
those who prefer to take the family out for a leisurely cruise
around the 50 kilometres shoreline and those who take
competitive racing seriously.

It's not surprising that some members have been drawn
to the oceans of the world. TYC sailors continue to fly the
Club burgee far beyond the confines of Hartbeespoort Dam.

TYC members regularly take part in competitions
offshore and in foreign waters.

All these achievements are well documented in
Sam Gluckman's book
"The History of the Transvaal Yacht Club 1925 - 2004"

From its beginnings, TYC has produced many fine sailors.
They have been men and women who have prized
sportsmanship on and off the water, who are worthy
ambassadors of our Club and Country wherever they
have sailed. There is no doubt that future TYC sailors will
carry on this tradition as long as the Club is in existence

Reciprocity

privileges with some of South Africa's premier clubs.
